RE: GM 6.5 liter Turbo Diesel

Marty the 94 is the first year of the DB4 pump. This is a electronic pump and injector set-up. 93 was mechanical. Both can be made to operate fine with a few simple fixes.

RE: GM 6.5 liter Turbo Diesel

It is a 1994. 230,000 on the body. 60,000 on motor and tranny. I think I could have it for $2,500. The truck looks clean.
I'd buy it if you need a burb, but that is me. You might ask the owner why the new engine and tranny? Was it a rebuild or a brand spankin new engine and tranny from GM. Also ask if he ever had a problem with the PMD. Also find out what gear is in it. My truck has 4.11's. There is a lot of simple and cheap things to do to these engines to make them more dependable.
Like I said, I tow a trailer about 6 to 7K with no problems at all. In Utah you can tow 75MPH. I did and had a lot left on the straight and level.
One more thing. If you don't know engines and mechanics I would advise you have a trusted mechanic look it over. Good luck.

RE: 6.0 Ford PowerStroke longevity/reliablility

WOW, what a nightmare. Sorry for your problems pld33270. It's really bad when you work so hard for that 2 week vacation and then something like this happens.
I hope Ford comes through for you. If not and you like the truck, I would just buck up on it and stud the heads, take the EGR off and put on a 2 micron filter on it. It won't be cheap but it will solve about 99% of the problems that the 6.0 had.

RE: GM 6.5 liter Turbo Diesel

I have a 6.5 and I will tell you right now that there is NO WAY your going to see 25 average US MPG with a burb.
Mine was the best of the best for mileage. Standard cab 4X2, 200 HP mechanical IP, + timing, no EGR, modded intake and 4" pipe. The only thing mine could have been better was a 3.73 rear end instead of the 4.11 I had.
If I averaged it out for good and bad I could get 19 or so. Long road trips on the flat about 20+ and in town 16 or so. The burb will get about 1 to 2 MPG less.
I towed for years with my 6.5 with about the same amount of weight. I was around 14K gross. I really like the truck. To tell the truth, I like driving my 6.5 better than my 06 LBZ D-max. Sure, I can not go 55MPH up all hills with my trailer in tow, so what, that is what gears are for. The slowest I got was about 30MPH on that hill between Utah and Nevada. I don't remember the road #?
Anyway, you do not say what year? 94 on up had problems with the PMD living. There is a simple harness fix with PMD will run you about 3 to 400 bucks to fix. The 4L80 is a really good tranny so no problems there.
If you can get it cheap and it is in good shape I would get it.

RE: HELP! F350 PS Losing Turbo Boost

Sounds like the VVT (turbo) is going out.
Or it could be a EGR valve/cooler problem.
And it could be as simple as an EBS. (exhaust backpressure sensor)
But don't rule out injectors either.
Either way it looks as though you guys are still under warranty. Don't try to fix it yourself, take it to a ford dealer that has a competent diesel mechanic, they should be able to take care of you.
If a turbo hose has come off you would hear a BOOM first, under load, and then a constant sound like a jet airplane. Plus the displaced turbo hose would be a constant loss of power, not an intermittent.
What he said. If the hose came off you would hear the high pressure leak.
More than likely the turbo vanes are getting stuck and drifting. Common problem on the 6.0

RE: Holding The Door

What kills me and this is down in the south, I'll hold the door open so my wife can push the baby stroller thru the door but before she makes a move, several people go thru instead. Her and I joke about it but its plain RUDE. I never say anything but I want to slap the sense back into some people. What would you do?
Clap and say good move!!! Way to fill that hole buddy!!!
You see, I race and you have to beat that person to the hole before it closes!!! LOL ;)
You have to teach your wife to edge the baby stroller over and rub a few ankles. Sort of like rubbing paint but better.:B Have her make engine sounds when she does this because as a crew chief I know it works better!!! :W
If you are in NASCAR country, people will take no offence to this and your wife might even get a, "WOW, good move there momma!!!" Way to cut me off with juniors stroller!!

RE: Home made Diesel?

Yes, It can be done. But remember, Road Use Taxes MUST be paid on all fuel used on the highways. Yes, the tax man WILL get you. Yes, it HAS happened. The fines are atrocious!
Just how does the "tax man" know if your making your own fuel?

RE: superchip or hypertec ?

If the "chip" can modify fueling parameters, why couldn't it modify for economy as the prime consideration at the expense of power? If it's 650 ft lbs stock and 450 ft lbs is enough for the application at hand, shut it down a bit. Or does an educated right foot accomplish all that there is to gain in that respect? Don't know much about diesels as you can tell. Gas engines I know how to gain economy!
There is no throttle plate on a diesel. With a diesel, the more fuel the more RPM and power you get. You can add more fuel until it blows up or burns up.
In simple terms, your right foot is attached to a fuel valve. You want more power, you just add more fuel since there is no air valve on a diesel.
It's all about fuel with a diesel.

RE: 6.0 Ford PowerStroke longevity/reliablility

A few things to keep an eye out for when owning a 6.0.
Headgaskets, they like to pop, tuner or no tuner. (Like someone said above, check for scum around the overflow.)
Bed plate leaks.
EGR cooler letting go.
VV turbo's sticking. (They really like to do this if you let the truck set)
Head bolts breaking.
Intercooling boots coming off the intercooler.
Some injector problems.
That's most of the common problems.
Keep an eye on the oil. The HPOP will really break up that oil. If it gets thin change it out sooner than latter. Hope this helps.

RE: MPG test with programmer - increase or false claims?

ib516, your right on the money.
I have said this many many times. There is only 3 major things a box plays with and several little things. Fuel, timing and boost are the big three. Out of those 3, fuel is the big dog to make power with a diesel.
Now, sure, you can make up some efficiency by jacking the timing up. BUT, then the N0X goes sky high because the burn is better.
All in all, the OEM got it correct when it comes to power to air pollution. Sure, you can cheat and get .2 to .5 better MPG but then the engine will be making a lot of N0X.
The other side of the coin is this. People put boxes on their engines to make power. Lets say with out a box your truck will pull a certain hill at 40 mph at WOT.
With a box that same truck will pull that same hill at 65 MPH at WOT. BUT that same truck will be "fueled up" and use a lot more fuel. Maybe 1 out of 10 people will keep their speed down to 40 on that same hill. The rest will be foot to the wood and pull the hill at 65 MPH using lots of fuel with their new found power.
There is no free lunch. If there was, don't you think the big 3 (soon to be the big 2) would do it? Ford is even putting spoilers on their trucks to pick up .2 to .5 MPG. If it were as simple as putting a box on their trucks, don't you think they would do it?

RE: Ford 6.0L Diesel news

Appreciate the info. and insight concerning my question.
Do you think this may be why Ford is working on this new in-house diesel to replace the 6.4 Navistar/Ford diesel?
The 6.4 has only been out 2 years. That is a very short time, and to be designing or preparing to replace it seems rather strange.
Is the 6.4, basically the 6.0 engine only stroked or bored to a larger displacement, and does it have Navistar's blessings of reliability, this time, at it's current(Ford) power output?
No problem Eightball.
Yes I do. The marriage is over. When they were fighting, Nav refused to give Ford engines!!! Pretty hard to make trucks without engines!!!
Ford is through with this deal.
This is a big big project. Anybody can design a good engine that will last. BUT to design a clean diesel nowdays is a monumental task. There is just SOOOOOOOO many things to deal with.
Ford lost a bunch of $$$'s on the 6.4. It's BIG $$$'s to develop anything now days; and to keep an engine design just 2 or 3 years is crazy. That is why GM made big bucks on the small block Chevy. Only a few parts to keep in stock because all the parts were the same for about 40 years or so.
From what I have read the 6.4 is a good engine. The only thing that is screwed up is things from Ford subcontractors, like radiators and DPF's.
For the record, if I could get a 6.0 for a song, and needed one, I would in a heart beat. I would pull the engine and stud it, yank the EGR system off and never look back.
But what do I know, I drive a 5.7 diesel every day to work!!!! And we know what everyone thinks about those engines!!!:B You just have to be smarter than those engineers that work for the big 3..........soon to be big two!!!
Thanks Sweetpete.

RE: Ford 6.0L Diesel news

So please.....anyone.......I'm really curious about Navistar-only 6.0's versus Navistar-Ford F-series/excursion/E350 diesels of the early, vintage that is in question. What was different about them and did both itinerations of diesels have similar problems of the same magnitude?
If I understand your question correctly EB, it goes like this. (Or so I understand as the story goes)
Navistar had designed the 6.0. Not a bad engine up to around 250 HP or so. The other two had big dogs in the game by then with the D-Max and the Cummins. The D-max was at 300 HP then. I don't know what the HP of the HO Cummins was back then so I can't speak to that.
The HP game was on and Ford did not want to be the 100lb weakling in the HP race. Navistar tested the engine at around 250 HP and said it was good to go.
Ford could not live with that as the bow tie was at 300HP. Ford jacked the puter fuel rate up or told Navistar to jack it up. (I think Ford did it with their own puter??) I think that is some of the law suite between the two companies. Navistar said they gave Ford a good engine and we can prove it because it runs good and lasts good in other applications. Ford said it was junk from the outset.
Ford just turned a good engine into a bomb with the fuse lit. All it needed was customers to drive it until it went off.
Like the 6.2 GM engine, the 6.0 was a good engine when rated to a lower HP setting. Jack it up and watch the parts fly. :B

RE: GMC Sierra '06

Just a heads up...Check this:
The 06' Duramax came in two engine generations... the "LLY" and the "LBZ".
The "LBZ" has more horsepower and higher torque. Both are first rate set ups with the Allison 6 speed. They are different engines, not just different
The only difference in the 06 LLY and LBZ is the tune. 05 and down is a different engine. This was talked about many times in the dieselplace.
Sounds high to me but it is worth what your willing to pay.
IMHO the 06 LLY is the best if you want the best fuel mileage. The LBZ is the best if you want the most power and a little less fuel mileage.
Both are very good.

RE: propane boost on older GM's

Yes propane has less energy than gasoline, but propane + gasoline has more energy than just gasoline alone.
How does that work? :h
Gasoline has about 150,000 BTU's / gallon. Propane has about 92,000 BTU's / gallon.
Where does the extra energy come from?
You can't go over stocho on a gasoline engine. Well; you can...........but you just use more fuel and get less power.

RE: E85 tax benefit??

It makes sence.
From memory, pure gasoline has about 19,000 BTU's/lb and pure eth has about 12,000 BTU's/lb.
That means your going to loose big time mileage on eth. The 15% gas in E85 will help some but not much.
No one will ever switch over if they loose mileage (=$'s)on the deal. At least I won't.
Can you break even with the tax deal? I don't know the answer to that other than it just depends on the numbers.

RE: Low ash oil

There's nothing "expensive" or "special" about CJ class oil.
When my supplier went from CI to CJ the price went from about $1.25 to about $2.30 a quart. That is almost a 100% increase.
To me, that's expensive!!!
All that and you get a poorer quality oil for twice the price.:M

RE: EGT-Turbo

pre-turbo is better. it's useless to have a post turbo pyro,
Useless? What? :?:R
Post, Pre, it makes almost no difference. I have had post and pre on one of my engines. The difference was 100 degrees on EGT. If you have the correct gauge it makes no difference. They make pre or post gauges that have the appropriate markings where needed.
